Servo Motor Controller Offers High Performance And Versatility

Date Added: 4th May 2012

Servo motor controllers have now entered a new era with the introduction of maxon motor's new ESCON 36/2 DC range of miniaturised PWM servo motor controllers.  Maxon refers to this new technology of innovative controllers as their "little miracle" with good reason.  This easy to set up and easy to use controller range features 4-quadrant control of brushed permanent-magnet DC motors up to 72W with dynamic control of speeds between 1 to 150,000 rpm.

The highly miniaturised and ESCON units measure only 55mm x 40mm in plan and can be operated in a number of modes including open loop, closed loop and current control.  Extra featured functions of these highly versatile and compact servo motor controllers include speed ramping to avoid sudden changes in speed and optional power disabling on one rotational direction.  Furthermore, motor currents limits can be programmed into the servo motor controller to protect the motor from damage.

The ESCON 36/2 DC servo controllers are programmable with simple set-up procedures via dedicated cabling, (available for each unit) and USB port to a PC or laptop using simple step-by-step on-screen prompts. This "little miracle" is self-contained in that it needs no external chokes or filters for motor control.

This miniature ESCON unit has the highest energy density that technology can currently devise and this is expressed as being rated as 95% energy efficient.  It is not surprising, therefore, to find a full range of built-in protection circuits to safeguard the controller/ motor combo against over-temperature, over-current, over and under-voltage, voltage spikes, EMS compliance and short-circuits.

The ESCON 36/2 DC servo motor controller range is the first from maxon motor of their new technology controllers and the range is ideally suited for use with maxon's highly successful permanent magnet brushed DC motor range.  These controllers will find many applications for low-consumption battery and other similar applications such as small machine manufacture, automation, assembly robots and other mechatronic uses.

Senior maxon motor UK spokesman, Paul Williams said at the UK launch of the ESCON 36/2 DC servo motor controller range: "with that much performance and versatility in such a compact package, the only thing easier than the ESCON's setup is making the decision to use one."
