As a result of superior, chemical, dielectric and thermal properties PTFE tubing is among the best fluoro-plastic materials available. This unique set of properties helps to enable manifold problem solutions for the medical, electrical and chemical sectors.
As a result of a very stable combination consisting of carbon atoms and fluorine, along with a near complete shield from the carbon chain thanks to the fluorine atoms, PTFE shows a near universal level of chemical resistance. This factor can be attributed in part to the molecular structure of the material. What is found is that a layer of the fluorine atoms covers the straight carbon chain.
There are a few exceptions to the chemical reactions that occur between the PTFE tubing and other substances. Alkali metals when they are in a dissolved or even melted state will begin to attack the polymerizate which results in a brown discoloration. At higher pressure and temperatures, chlorinetriflouride and elementary fluoride will affect PTFE. For a number of years now, there has been an increase in paste compounds. Of these, the most commonly used compounds are PFTE-graphite, PFTE-bronze, PTFE-glass and PTFE-carbon.
Wherever it is found that superb thermal and chemical resistance along with adhesive properties are required, a pure-white material will continue being used for the PTFE. When wear resistance which is generally found in industrial applications must be increased, glass-filled material will be the preferred material of use.
Both graphite and carbon have been shown to have improvements on mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity both carbons. The creep tendency of a base can be reduced by adding some bronze to it.
What is increasing importance as a filler and is usually suitable for medical applications is bismuth-carbonate. For surgical procedures, these tubes can be used for endoscopic surgery and allows a display to remain visible on a fluoroscopic monitor.
These prove to be the most important factors that help to contribute to the utilization of the PFTE tubing. This is in all of the medical, electrical, mechanical and chemical industries. The tubing for these range from .3 x .8 mm - 24x 26 mm and continue to go up from there.
