Multi Beam Coupling Range From Huco

Date Added: 4th May 2012

Huco Engineering manufactures and supplies a huge range of power train couplings for every conceivable need and this includes multi beam coupling products for where the power train is misaligned either temporarily (flexing) or through poor alignment.  This misalignment can be angular or axial.  This is frequently encountered where say, one motor is replaced with another with a slightly differing base to shaft dimension and there could be a different shaft diameter requiring a stepped coupling.

Angular misalignment is usually the result of flexing of the power train in operation that can be found on vehicular or mobile farm machinery.  The amount of flexing determines what type of coupling is employed.  The problem is that any angular misalignment can introduce a force vector that is not transmitted and thus it can be translated into heat in the coupling if not properly designed.

The multi-beam coupling range from Huco largely gets over this problem by either 3 or 6 distinct helical cut elements (or ‘beams') each capable of efficiently translating part of the angular misalignment but at the same time avoids excessive wind up (or backlash) of the coupling under torque.  In practice, the distinct elements are arranged in a 3-start arrangement with the 6-beam having two such 3-start elements separated by a central solid element.

Axial misalignment (or parallel offset) within relatively small limits of the order of 1% are easily handled by the 3-beam multi-beam coupling whereas the 6-beam handles typically ¾ of the comparable size 3-beam coupling. As always, there is a trade off with the 3-beam being more torsionally stiff than the 6-beam but the 6-beam can accept greater angular misalignment (or offset).

One of the common problems in using shaft couplings is the need to accommodate relatively large longitudinal tolerances.  This is accommodated in both the 3-beam and 6-beam coupling by using the "relieved" version wherein the central body is reamed out to provide additional clearance for the shafts to protrude into the flexing body.

In summary, the multi-beam coupling range from Huco features a torsionally rigid design, no moving parts, clamp or set screw shaft hubs and zero backlash.  These beams are available to accommodate shafts of between 1mm and 38mm.  The couplings are available in stainless steel, aluminium and acetal (with stainless steel hubs.  The latter provides the additional feature of electrical insulation and is available in sizes to accommodate 3mm to 16mm diameter shafts.

For more extreme angular or parallel offsets, Huco can provide other coupling types such as the Oldham coupling (sliding disc) and the universal lateral (often found in encoder machinery)
