Stemmer Imaging has been at the forefront of machine vision, which has come a long way in the last 25 years.  This all started with the original monochrome single line scan camera equipment used in post offices scanners to read and sort mail, and other production line applications where high intensity or stroboscopic lighting was used.

In that 25 years, the capability, resolution and supporting control systems have expanded enormously. This now includes double line scanning at high frequency (and high resolution and in low lighting conditions) two, three and even four-colour dichroic prism beam splitters for full RGB/NIR colour rendition and analysis, 2-D scanning and 3-D scanning, web inspection and motion analysis.

The basis of how Linescan imaging works is that a passive scanning beam excites one single line of sensor pixels each typically 7 to 15μm to capture a two-dimensional image.  Each scan, typically at a clock speed of 40kHz, will scan an adjacent line brought about by either moving the object being scanned or moving the scanning beam.

Things get complicated when double scanning takes place to improve resolution in low light with electronic timing control systems.  For colour systems, there are basically two ways this can happen.  Either a single beam is split into three colours by using a dichroic prism or multiple scanning with dichroic filters.

The modern systems use very narrow apertures which then allow higher depth of field for objects that are not flat.  Thus individual objects free-falling past the linescan camera such as 3D scanning in waste sorting for recycling can be scanned, identified and sorted whilst in free fall.  At the other end of the scale, automatic electronic component production line manufacture use line scan cameras to inspect as well as, micro-robotic pick & place operations.

Stemmer Imaging supply a complete range of machine vision solutions based on linescan camera technology from two of the leading manufacturers in this field, Teledyne Dalsa and JAI.

The DALSA range includes:

DALSA Eclipse - Compact high sensitivity TDI line scan camera series that are used for bar code reading, postal sorting (including bar-code reading, address lift and cancellation mark detection), electronics and semiconductor manufacturing machine vision and production line web inspection.

DALSA Piranha - High performance line scan camera series with TDI technology that are used for postal/parcel sorting, document scanning, low light applications, 100% print inspection, document scanning, inspection of natural materials e.g. food, wood, ore, building materials, electronic manufacturing inspection, production line completeness control and solar panel inspection.

DALSA Spyder - Low cost colour and monochrome line-scan camera series that can be used for flat panel inspection, postal sorting, inspection of wood/brick or steel, print inspection, web inspection and pick & place applications.  The colour version can additionally be used for cotton and textile inspection, food, drug, and tobacco inspection, recycling sorting and general vision applications.

DALSA Trillium - 3-CCD line scan camera series for the most demanding applications including web inspection for printing/ceramics/textiles, part inspection and sorting  including labels, plastics, minerals, wood, waste processing/recycling, surface inspection of PCBs, semiconductors & document scanning, and texture identification.

The JAI Range includes:

JAI L series - High-performance 3xCCD colour line scan camera series with high scan speed with RGB dichroic beam splitter prisms that are used in demanding environments were space is at a premium.

JAI LQ - Prism-based 4-CCD colour line scan camera series with high scan speed with RGB dichroic beam splitter prisms for RGB/NIR that can be used for fruit and vegetable sorting including colour, ripeness, signs for decay and  foreign objects, web inspection  of textile, paper & glass, surface inspection of wood tiles, and metal displays for scratches and defects, 2D & 3D print inspection, PCB inspection and paint coat applications.

JAI LT - 3 CMOS RGB line scan camera series with RGB dichroic beam splitter prisms for RGB high span speed and excellent colour resolution.
