Jaw Coupling For Uni-directional Loads

Date Added: 4th May 2012

In power transmission applications, shaft couplings are necessary to transmit power from one shaft to another. An efficient and robust assembly is required as well as a design which allows you to dismantle the power train for simple maintenance and repair. These couplings need to accommodate varying degrees of axial misalignment and radial misalignment, due to either installation restrictions or operational flexing brought on by temperature changes or movements. Shaft Couplings also need to accommodate backlash due to start up or shock loading changes as well as end-float changes.

Huco Dynatork manufacture a complete range of power shaft couplings for a wide range of applications. The Huco Jaw Coupling is particularly well-suited to uni-directional loading in either vertical or horizontal power train shafts and also where shock loading, vibration and radial misalignment may occur. The jaw coupling greatly reduces backlash and goes a long way to eliminate vibration damping due to the uniquely shaped polyurethane elastomer spider hub insert.

The Huco jaw power coupling range encompasses aluminium, cast iron shaft jaws pieces to suit the environmental and power transmission requirements.  They all operate in a temperature range between -40°C to +100°C (and with a short duration maximimum of 120°C). One feature that is most useful is that each hub is supplied blank or with a pilot hole so that it can be bored to accommodate a particular shaft thread size. Each metal 3-part jaw coupling is supplied with the polyurethane elastomer in three grades, soft (80 Shore A grade), standard (92 Shore A grade) and Hard (98 Shore A grade).

The cast iron range can accommodate shaft sizes up to 100mm, the maximum transmitted power varies from 93Nm to 3,500Nm and the maximum allowable speed varies from 5,600rpm to 7,100rpm, depending on jaw coupling size and elastomer specified.

The aluminium range can accommodate shaft sizes up to 45mm, the maximum power transmitted varies from 17Nm to 320Nm and the maximum allowable speed varies from 5,600rpm to 10,600rpm. Again this depends on the size of the jaw coupling and the specified elastomer.

Huco also supply a range of 2-part plastic jaw power couplings constructed in moulded polyamide.  These couplings, depending on the size and duty - they come with either a keyed extruded aluminium insert, or (for the smallest sizes) a construction made up entirely of plastic. Shaft sizes range from 5mm to 20mm diameter, the allowable torque ranges from 0.58Nm to 490Nm with different ratings for speed ranges up to 3,000rpm and above.
