Friction Clutch Range From Huco

If you have used an electric screwdriver a battery-powered electric drill or a fixed spool fishing reel, then you will have experienced the action of a friction clutch when the screw or bit won't turn any more or the line comes under excessive tension, the unit just clicks in the manner of a torque wrench. However, unlike the torque wrench, the user-adjustable friction clutch is also there to protect the electric motor and battery from damage.
The miniature friction clutch range from Huco fills a specific range of needs for clutches and transmissions applications where they act as user-adjustable torque limiters for both safety and equipment protection. These friction clutches (sometimes known as slip or overload clutches) work by interleaved friction plates that are attached in line to the power source on one side and the transmission on the other.
Normally, they turn together, held by friction, but if the transmission is overloaded the friction is overcome at the pre-determined limit, the transmission's rotation is interrupted until the torque is reduced below the threshold value.
By varying the pressure between the plates (by means of applying axial tension between them), the pre-determined limit can be changed. For higher torque limits, the Huco miniature friction clutch range includes 6-plate friction plate clutches.
All of the Huco range uses annular adjuster rings to change the limiting torque pre-load setting. The power dissipation, typically at 7W is quite low under slip with this type of torque limiter and at the limiting slip speed of between 600 and 1,000 rpm.
Both the basic and the 6-plate Huco friction clutch designs are available with set screw and clamp fixings. However it does not tolerate radial forces through misalignment of the power source from its transmission. To overcome this problem and to reduce the numbers of components inline on the transmission, Huco have come up with a neat solution with two variations. The unit is fitted with either an intergral SS or IC Oldham coupling.
These miniature dry clutches with their low profiles and adjustable shaft sizes of 8mm and 16mm diameter and torque transmission limits of between 0.94 Nm and 7.6Nm and with three click settings, have many applications in industry workshops and process plants and powered equipment where overloading would otherwise cause damage and perhaps injury.
