DC Electric Motors For Tough Conditions

Maxon Motor have always had the best reputation for their power drive products and working with customers to develop new products. Maxon's long experience of special drive solutions in tough conditions is legendary in such projects as jet fighters and NASA Mars rovers (one of which is still operating after 7 years in glorious isolation on Mars).
Maxon have now developed the 240 watt EC22 HD (Heavy Duty) brushless DC motor in collaboration with UK's oil exploration industry for down-the-hole operation. These are the toughest conditions that can be found on the Planet at depths of 5,000m, up to 1,700bar (25,000psi) pressure, extreme temperatures of between -80deg C to 240deg C and the EC22 HD has been proven to withstand violent vibrations of 25grms and impact loads of 100g for extended periods.
Operational Options
The EC22 HD can be operated either in air or in oil. The basic design is the same but the oil cooling allows the trebling of the drive unit's capacity from 80watt rating to 240watt.
These types of dc electric motors can be supplied with high temperature Hall-effect sensors as an option. This allows running with sensors or running in sensorless mode with electrical motor controllers.

This motor is rated specifically for total submersion in oil under extreme temperature and pressure (up to 1,700bar) applications such as oil, gas and geothermal wells:

These dc electric motors are rated specifically for heavy duty operation in air and suitable for many applications including:
- Extreme temperature applications, ultra-high vacuum applications (low outgassing),
- Gas turbine starter/generators for aircraft engines, regulation of combustion engines
- Oil, gas and geothermal wells
- Robotic exploration vehicles
- Pumps and valves for liquid metal cooling
