Vote For Tutbury EcoPower

Hi again friends

Tutbury EcoPower

If you have been following my blogs for any time, you will have noticed by now that I am both a very practical engineer and I believe passionately in reducing energy waste.  This is also good business in my book.  ”Why do I bring this up?” you may be asking.  Well, for the last 2½ years, I have been getting my hands dirty, as it were, by supporting a community organisation, Tutbury EcoPower.

Our aims are to reduce the local community’s carbon footprint in a series of practical measures in a sustainable way to benefit the community.   In practical terms, this means saving residents money with lower energy bills and more efficient homes.

In the Summer of this year, we as one of nearly 1,000 communities,  entered a national EnergyShare Competition to win a large sum of money for community based energy projects.   After 2 rounds of voting, Tutbury EcoPower has reached the final and we are competing with 5 others in the medium project range and we are now looking for your help to win this EnergyShare competition by voting for us on the EnergyShare website by Saturday, 3 December.  At stake is a £75,000!

With this £75,000, Tutbury EcoPower has committed to spending it all on Solar PV panel installations for community buildings including the Village Hall used by all manner of children’s and adult organisations and classes, the Old Tutbury School used by scouts,  youth club and mother and toddler groups.  By these means, we hope to kick-start this particular endeavour into a sustainable future with funding generated out of the surpluses.

In fact, our flagship project is a 75kW mini hydro-electric scheme alongside a local weir on the River Dove and when operational, we hope to generate some £30,000 per annum for the good of the local community by funding other projects.  It is worth saying that every penny we generate, will go back to the community as the team are all volunteers such as Chartered Engineers, Accountants, project managers, hydraulic engineers and many other skills.

Tutbury EcoPower has gained a great deal of credibility over the 3 years of its existence and the stakeholders and supporters read like the who’s who of the business and political world in the UK.

So please share this with your colleagues, family and friends on Facebook and, of course VOTE, VOTE VOTE for a really worthwhile cause by 3 December>>>>

New Technology Applications

Hi there again friends – it has been a little while hasn’t it.  Anyway, I thought that I would visit a number of things that caught my eye in the technical press to get you thinking about which way some technologies are heading.

You will all have heard of the famous engineer’s KISS principle: “Keep It Straightforward and Simple”.  Mimicking nature is one way of ensuring that the solution is practical in technical terms but will it pass muster commercially? Continue Reading »New Technology Applications

Solenoids For Security And Transportation

I thought that this week, we should talk about solenoids and solenoid valves as they have wide use within industry, commerce, transportation and general security.  This was prompted by an unpleasant memory that involved them some years ago. Use of Radial Lip Seal Technology In The Engineering Industry

Phil The Main Editor

In a previous post in April, I talked about What’s In Hydraulic Seals?.  This time, I thought I would regale you with a few stories about the use of sealing technology in the engineering industry.  Sealing technology has moved on a-pace since the age of steam. Surveillance and Image Processing

As you read this, you will no doubt be thinking how topical the subject is today!  Sophisticated surveillance of public places in the UK and elsewhere in the developed world has been increasing in the face of increased terrorism threats, more rampant criminality and now social unrest. What Is Transactive Memory?

Having just got over a hard disk failure on my business pc, it got me to thinking about how vulnerable we all are when it comes to making notes.  The proprietary back up system did work up to a point but I found that simple things like the automatic address book on MS Outlook Continue Reading »What Is Transactive Memory?

DIY In The Workplace?

Phil The Main Editor

This time I am having a general rant about equipment efficiency and whole -life costing principles.  As practical people, Engineers will have considered doing some do-it-yourself (DIY) in the home and most will have actually done some in their lives. Continue Reading »DIY In The Workplace?

London's New Thames Passenger Cable Crossing

In April 2011, Transport-for-London (TfL) announced that the Thames spanning cable car crossing project connecting the ExCel Exhibition Centre on Victoria Dock in London Docklands to the O2 arena site on the North Greenwich peninsular will start construction this summer. Keeping Going In Adverse Conditions

This week, I am concentrating on the functioning of engineered systems in adverse conditions prompted first by the news that Icelandic volcanic ash is again causing disruption to the airways of the UK and Northern Europe. Continue Reading »Keeping Going In Adverse Conditions

Engineering Stock Items for Industry

It is one thing as an engineering company to purchase raw materials, whole assemblies, tools, large items of equipment or a whole production line project from recognised brand-named suppliers. However, it is not always easy to get certain items for your factory engineers to build or adapt a mechanical/electrical production facility. Continue Reading »Engineering Stock Items for Industry
